A phone-controlled AI companion concept that connects a conversational plush device to a React Native app and embedded hardware.
Build a companion, not just a device
PlushGPT came from imagining an AI companion that could live outside a phone. Together with a hackathon friend, I explored the idea of a soft hardware character that could be controlled from a mobile app, respond to conversation, and become a place for small memories and stories.
The device was meant to feel approachable. A person could talk to it, share something from their day, or ask it to tell a short story. The personality would come from the relationship built over time, not from making the hardware look like a conventional robot.
Phone, cloud, and embedded hardware
The companion app used React Native and Firebase for the mobile and connected-service layers. Arduino and ESP hardware handled the embedded side, with Raspberry Pi also part of the exploration. The phone acted as the control surface while the device became the physical expression of the interaction.
A different kind of interface
This project moved the question away from screens. Instead of asking what another chat interface should look like, I was thinking about presence, voice, memory, and the small physical cues that could make an AI feel more like a companion. That made the hardware constraints as important as the software architecture.
An idea worth carrying forward
PlushGPT was an early exploration, but it gave the concept a clear direction: useful AI does not always have to appear as a dashboard. Sometimes the better interface is something that can sit nearby, listen, and make a little room for imagination.
